Residents in Winnipeg are being urged to stay alert after police issued a public safety notification regarding the release of a convicted sex offender now living in the community.
According to authorities, the 52-year-old man was released from custody on March 17 after serving time at Stony Mountain Institution. His latest sentence was related to repeated breaches of court-ordered supervision conditions.
Police say the individual has a long and troubling history of violent and sexual offences, including a prior conviction for sexual assault. He has also been designated a long-term offender, meaning he remains under supervision due to the ongoing risk he poses to the public.
Despite participating in some rehabilitation programs, officials continue to classify him as a high risk to reoffend, particularly in a sexual or violent manner. Authorities have specifically warned that women may be at increased risk.
The offender is expected to reside within Winnipeg under strict legal conditions, including a long-term supervision order and a lifetime weapons prohibition. These conditions are designed to manage his behavior and reduce potential harm, but police emphasize that community awareness remains critical.
Law enforcement officials say the purpose of releasing this information is not to cause panic, but to ensure residents are informed and can take reasonable precautions in their daily lives.
At the same time, police are strongly reminding the public not to take matters into their own hands. Any form of vigilantism or harassment could interfere with ongoing monitoring efforts and may result in criminal charges.
Residents are encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings, look out for one another, and report any suspicious activity to authorities immediately. Crime Stoppers is also available for those wishing to provide information anonymously.
As this situation develops, staying informed and cautious will play a key role in maintaining community safety across Winnipeg.
