A mother in Winnipeg is sharing her terrifying experience after a home invasion that quickly escalated into a tragic and unsettling incident.

The woman says the ordeal began in what seemed like a routine moment. She had briefly unlocked her back door to let her dogs outside, unaware that it would create an opportunity for a stranger to enter her home. Inside, her four-month-old baby was sleeping in another room.

Within seconds, a man had made his way into the house.

I was screaming. I was saying, ‘Get out of my house, get out of my house. I have a four-month-old. Get out of my house,’” she recalled, describing the panic that set in as she realized someone had entered her home uninvited.

The situation quickly intensified. Her partner, who had been in the bathroom, rushed out after hearing the commotion. He immediately stepped in, positioning himself between the intruder and his family in an effort to protect both the woman and their infant child.

“My partner came out and tried to keep himself between me and the man, and the man from me and my son,” she said.

The woman called 911 right away as the intruder moved toward them. However, the situation took an unexpected turn before it could escalate further. According to her account, the man appeared to be heavily intoxicated and did not get far before collapsing.

Emergency responders arrived, but the man — identified as a 34-year-old — was found unconscious. Despite efforts, he later died, with early indications pointing to a suspected drug overdose as the cause.

Authorities have not indicated that the intruder and the family knew each other, suggesting the incident may have been random. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding both the break-in and the man’s death.

While the family was not physically harmed, the emotional impact remains significant. The woman says the experience has left her shaken, highlighting how quickly an ordinary moment can turn into a frightening situation.

The incident has also sparked broader concerns about safety and the ongoing challenges related to substance use in the community. Situations like this underscore the unpredictable nature of such encounters and the risks they can pose, even in one’s own home.

For this Winnipeg family, the focus now is on recovery — and regaining a sense of security after a deeply distressing experience that unfolded just steps away from their sleeping child.
