DAUPHIN, MANITOBA — In an unusual morning incident, a taxi stolen in Dauphin was driven directly to the local RCMP detachment twice before the suspect was apprehended, leaving authorities both baffled and dealing with property damage.
The incident began early Saturday morning when a 32-year-old passenger reportedly refused to pay his fare and then took control of the taxi. RCMP officers were alerted shortly after 5:00 a.m. and spotted the stolen vehicle about 25 minutes later. When police attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver fled, initiating a brief pursuit.
In an unexpected twist, the stolen taxi was then observed parked in the RCMP detachment parking lot around 5:40 a.m. The driver briefly stopped, then drove off, only to return minutes later. Officers quickly boxed in the vehicle and successfully arrested the man without further incident.
During the events, the taxi struck a wheelchair ramp at the detachment, causing significant damage. Authorities confirmed that the suspect is now facing multiple charges, including theft of a vehicle, flight from police, and two counts of mischief over $5,000.
RCMP have described the incident as "bizarre and unpredictable," emphasizing the unusual nature of a stolen vehicle being driven directly to a police station, not once but twice. The man remains in custody as the investigation continues.
This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable challenges law enforcement can face, even in smaller communities. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity promptly.
